The new feature lets users link their payment cards directly to the app, simplifying everyday transactions for its 8.6 million users. This update is part of Swish’s efforts to adapt its services to meet changing consumer preferences and expand its functionality.
Initially, the tap-to-pay feature will only be available for Android users. However, there are plans to enable the feature for iOS devices following Apple’s recent decision to allow access to NFC functionality in Europe. Once implemented, iPhone users will also be able to make contactless payments through the Swish app.
The rollout of this feature depends on the participation of banks. So far, one bank has gone live with the service, and another is in the process of onboarding.
Swish’s new feature is compatible with both Mastercard and Visa networks, offering users greater flexibility and accessibility in their payment options. Representatives from Mastercard and Visa highlighted the collaborative effort behind this feature, emphasizing the opportunities it creates to enhance the payment experience and expand options for consumers.
The functionality is designed to be easy to use. When the service becomes available, users will receive a notification in the app, prompting them to add their payment card. Payments can then be made by holding the phone close to a contactless terminal, while transaction details and purchase history remain accessible in the app for convenience.
This development represents a step forward for Swish as it broadens the scope of its services. By introducing tap-to-pay technology, Swish aims to improve the accessibility of digital payments, offering a streamlined experience for users both in Sweden and abroad.
