Sicap launches platform for OTA provisioning of NFC applications

Friday 3 April 2009 13:19 CET | News

Swiss wireless provisioning specialist Sicap launches a server-side software which allows operators to provide contactless applications to any device or SIM designed for NFC services.

Sicap’s in-house database OTA Device Management Center recognises device capabilities and delivers mobile applications for financial and commercial partners. In a second stage, Sicap uses the server-side software SIM OTA platform to transfer NFC service applets wherever the secure element which stores the payment data may be located: in the SIM card, in a micro-SD (secure digital) card or in an embedded security controller found in the phone. Sicap states that its service would allow network operators to control the NFC business.

In the NFC ecosystem, there are many parties involved, namely handset manufacturers, chip manufacturers, telecommunications companies and banks. Each party has a different opinion about where the secure element should be stored: in the device, in the SD card or in the SIM.

In order to counter operators’ difficulties to access and manage the secure element, the GSMA has released the requirements for NFC-enabled handsets. The organisation imposed the single wire protocol (SWP) to interface between the NFC element and the SIM. SWP effectively involves the SIM in the delivery chain, assuring mobile operators cannot be bypassed in the NFC ecosystem.

Sicap says it will use its service to support some of the customers which plan to conduct NFC trials in 2009 and 2010.
