Exxon Mobil, a global publicly-traded oil and gas company, has joined the US-based Merchant Customer Exchange, a coalition focused on the US consumer mobile payments market.

The MCX coalition is set to build a merchant-controlled mobile payments infrastructure that will compete with initiatives such as Isis and Google Wallet.

The addition of the new members takes the total number of merchants participating in MCX to more than 50. The members represent 100,000 locations and USD 1 trillion in payments annually.
