Online sales witness 16.1% growth year-over-year

Online sales have witnessed a 16.1 percent growth in March 2011, as compared to a 13.2 percent increase registered in the previous month, according to the macroeconomic indicator MasterCard SpendingPulse issued by MasterCard Advisors, the professional services divison of MasterCard Worldwide.

Online total apparel has seen an 18.7 percent growth, marking the 16th straight double-digit increase. The sub-categories of apparel have also grown, namely the department stores (8.4 percent) and electronics (up 14 percent).

According to the MasterCard SpendingPulse, total apparel sales have recorded their 8th consecutive year-over-year sales gains, increasing by 4.4 percent year-over-year. Nevertheless, the children’s wear category has remained above 10 percent while women’s category was in the 6-7 percent range. The footwear category has registered a 1.6 percent decrease, as compared to February 2011.

During the period under review, the furniture sector has seen a 2.4 increase, while housing-related sectors have recorded a 8-9 percent year-over-year increase in sales.
