Still recovering from the grip of the financial crisis, Spanish consumers are hunting for cheaper prices and for products and services currently unavailable to them, whether that’s online rather than in store, overseas rather than domestic. Spain has also seen a significant growth in mobile commerce, with a 66.5% increase in consumers browsing retail sites on their mobile devices.

Cross-border Ecommerce Opportunities

• The number of transactions made in Spain on foreign sites accounted for 56.5% of ecommerce transactions and their volume accounted for 43.2% of the total value of the online market.
• Spanish online merchants are only exporting a small proportion of the total Spanish cross-border trade, exporting to approximately 7 million European consumers in 2013, compared to 46 million exports from the UK. 
• Home furnishings are a popular choice for overseas purchasing, followed by clothing and footwear.
• Spanish consumers mostly purchase from the UK (14.2%), China (12.5%), the US (10.3%) and Germany (9.9%) (In percentage of total Spanish cross-border purchases).
• Spanish online merchants mostly sell to the UK (3.9%), Italy (3.5%) and France (3.9%), (In percentage of cross-border sales from the respective countries).

• In Spain the official language is Spanish, also called Castilian, and is the first language of over 72% of the population.
