ACCC takes strong action against online payment phishing scam

Friday 2 May 2014 08:55 CET | News

The ACCC has released a warning towards Australians about a phishing email asking consumers to pay bogus gas or electricity bills, as part of a wider operation to stop email scams and online fraud.

The scam consists of the costumer clicking on a link or attachment to check the payment, and exposing the computer to a malicious software that enabled scammers to access the hard drive and witness the customer entering personal banking information.

This comes after another report of online fraud that cost Australians almost USD 25.3 million in 2013, with 2770 records of online romance scams.
