UK Government Security Industry Authority Selects Oberthur

Oberthur Card Systems has been selected as the exclusive smart card solution provider by British Telecom (BT) to supply an estimated 100,000 Licence cards over the next three years to the new UK Government agency, the Security Industry Authority (SIA).

The SIA regulates and licenses the private security industry in England and Wales and security employees with an objective to raise standards of professionalism and security within the industry and to promote best practice. Using an Oberthur Card Systems ID-One Smart Card the SIA will issue [cards] licences to registered members working in different sectors of the security industry. The SIA will maintain a public database of all licence holders. The contract to provide the applications and licensing service to the SIA including the implementation and maintenance of the a central database, the SIA Call Centre and supply and personalisation of smart cards was won by BT (May 2004) in competition with other key public service providers. BT has selected Oberthur Card Systems to provide the smart card service from manufacture to personalisation on behalf of the SIA. This service will include the Smart Card verification mechanism for authentication of the SIA cardholder.
