Smart Card Alliance Publishes Smart Card Case Studies and Implementation Profiles

Smart Card Case Studies and Implementation Profiles is a new publication from the Smart Card Alliance that is available to both members and non-members at the organizations online store at The new "Case Studies" report includes details on technology choices, business cases and lessons learned from 25 leading organizations worldwide that have implemented smart cards. Worldwide in scope, the profiles include implementations in important industry sectors and a wide variety of applications: secure identification, retail, financial, transit and health care. The enterprise and government sector has had very active smart card programs in recent years and is covered extensively in the report. Government programs presented include the Transportation Security Administration Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) and the card and credentialing programs of the U.S. Departments of Defense, Homeland Security and State. Corporate programs from Rabobank, Schlumberger, Shell Group and Sun Microsystems are also in the report. Three other industry sectors have a number of profiles in the report. The health care smart card programs from France, Germany and Taiwan are covered, as well as the recent University of Pittsburgh Medical Center project. For the financial and retail industries, the American Express ExpressPay, MasterCard PayPass and Visa Contactless Payment in South Korea are all discussed. An important and rapidly growing sector worldwide is mass transit, with the U.S. programs in San Francisco, Ventura County and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority included. Alliance members, who are themselves involved in the profiled industries, contributed to the 70-page report, which sells for $145.
