Sella launches biometric card trial

Italy-based Sella has partnered IDEMIA to launch a biometric recognition card trial enabling people to make payments with their fingerprint via a small chip sensor.

Offering biometric verification for both direct and contactless payments, the rollout of the card is led by Sella Personal Credit, a Sella Group company specialising in credit to families through a pilot project that involves a selected target of Italy-based customers.

The card’s mechanism and functions

A kit containing a particular device named ‘sleeve’ is received by each customer and enables them to enrol their fingerprint on the card completely autonomous in a matter of a few easy steps, without there being a need to go to the bank branch.  Once the fingerprint is acquired, the card is ready to use and requires no batteries, as the biometric chips is directly powered by the POS when making contact payments and through a magnetic field, when making contactless transactions. To have a payment authorised securely, all that would need to be done is to place the finger on the biometric chip on the front of the card.

Issued by Sella Personal Credit on the Visa scheme, the new F. CODE biometric card is developed in partnership with IDEMIA, an identity technologies company with multi-year knowledge when it comes to design and implementation in the payment card sector and a proven record in similar worldwide pilot projects.

The cards enable usage worldwide and are recognizable by any EMV-certified POS and ATM terminal.

Furthermore, the company is set on offering to their customers increasingly cutting-edge solutions to meet their personal needs, with officials stating that the collaboration with IDEMIA and Visa is a step further in achieving that goal, as the company aims to better their customer’s payment experience while simultaneously ensuring both security and simplicity.
