Vodafone, BNZ, Visa to trial NFC payments in New Zealand

Monday 9 September 2013 13:12 CET | News

Vodafone, Visa and financial institution Bank of New Zealand (BNZ), a subsidiary of Australian financial services provider National Australia Bank (NAB), have entered an agreement to launch a pre-commercial prepaid payments trial in New Zealand.

The trial is set to make use of Samsung Galaxy S3 and HTC One smartphones equipped with the Vodafone SmartPass app. Customers are able to load funds into their SmartPass account using a bank card as long as they are Vodafone subscribers and users of the app are set to be able to make payments at Visa Paywave enabled contactless terminals around New Zealand.

The Vodafone SmartPass application can be protected with a PIN code and transactions are backed by Visas global processing network.

In recent news, Vodafone and Orange were set to launch NFC payments services using prepaid cash accounts in Spain by the end of 2013.
